Advocacy

Since its inception in 1994, the ACLC has been an advocate for African Canadians' human rights in groundbreaking cases before every level of the Canadian judicial system, including the Supreme Court of Canada, administrative agencies, legislative bodies and executive regulatory agencies.

Issues

The ACLC has played a leadership role in forming community coalitions and advocating for the African Canadian community on key issues such as the following:

  • civilian oversight of police
  • police use of deadly force
  • arbitrary immigration detention
  • racial profiling by police and customs officers
  • Impact on African Canadian children of the "safe schools" provisions of the Education Act
  • hate crimes against African Canadians

Leadership in the Community

While taking a leading advocacy role on certain issues, the ACLC has been involved with partnerships and social justice organizations.

ACLC submissions before a wide variety of legal bodies provide a fuller picture of the range of the ACLC's advocacy efforts.
